- What does it cost to produce a commercial? -
Commercials can cost hundreds of thousands of dollars to produce. But unless your spot is airing on the Super Bowl, it’s probably not a good use of your marketing dollars. The specific costs of a commercial depend on things like where is it being shot – on location or in a studio? Is it necessary to build a set? Who will be featured in the spot – are there actors or is there a professional voice over? Are there any special effects? Will make-up and wardrobe be required?
We have experience producing commercials that cost a few thousand dollars to more than a hundred thousand dollars. But don't let that scare you. We always work closely with our clients to create a concept that fits within their budget. The most cost effective option is usually to shoot on our client’s location (store, shop, home etc.) so there will be no location fees and feature the client as the talent (so there are no talent fees). A simple spot like this, that doesn’t require more than a day of hi-definition shooting is about $7500. Remember that’s for creation and production of the finished commercial. Now it’s time for your customers to see it.
When it comes to broadcasting (airing) your spot on cable, generally it will cost somewhere between $8 and $16 every time it airs on one network in one zone. Repetition is important when it comes to advertising, so we tell clients that it is a good idea to air a spot 15 times per week for 12 weeks initially. Airing on one network in one zone for fifteen weeks is about $180 a week. Once again these figures are example estimates. The actual costs depend on the network (the more viewers the higher the cost) and the zone (the more viewers in the zone, the higher the cost). If you want your spot to air during a popular TV show or a high profile sporting event, you can, but the cost to air your spot will be higher since there will be more viewers. We advise most clients to budget at lease $500 a week for the initial run. You can always cancel at any time without a penalty.
